Last week, Juliana Lu, Sustainability Specialist, was in Barreirinhas, in the state of Maranh?o, to accompany an educational project conducted by Association Vaga Lume and sponsored by CTG Brasil for communities in the Amaz?nia Legal (the largest socio-geographic division in Brazil, containing all nine states in the Amazon basin).
Vaga Lume is a non-profit association that promotes the reading and the management of community libraries as a tool to transform the social reality of poor children in the Amazon. CTG Brasil supports Vaga Lume through the Culture Incentive Law (Rouanet), embracing the cause as one of the entity's biggest sponsors.
During the visit, Vaga Lume presented the work carried out in the 23 municipalities of the Amaz?nia Legal region, which currently has 149 community libraries, more than 3,500 trained reading facilitators and more than 900 active volunteers.
According to the association, the Amaz?nia Legal region was chosen strategically because it covers 61% of the Brazilian territory and it is home of 24 million Brazilians, most of them in social vulnerability, presenting low level of human development.
It was very important to know the Vaga Lume project closely. During the visit to the communities, I heard a child say that the library offers a way to know the world without leaving their home town. It was very gratifying to see how Vaga Lume provides this opportunity for them, taking reading to hard-to-reach regions with a very professional and dedicated team. It is rewarding to see CTG Brasil supporting such projects that promote the country's sustainable development.
